Prosecutors and Police Butt Heads

The conflict between prosecutors and the police is spreading.
The conflict was triggered by the police's request for the right to independently investigate incidents without the supervision of a prosecutor.
The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) said in a news release on May 7 that it is considering revoking the police's current right to directly send misdemeanors and traffic offences directly to trial, making it clear that the ministry firmly stands against the police's request.
In addition, the ministry stated that it will consider making judicial policemen, which carry out investigations, a separately-controlled body that will not be administered by the regular policeforce.
Kim Tae Jung, the supreme prosecutor-general, visited the Kwangju District Prosecutor's Office today and stressed that independent investigations by the police can never be possible.
The police have propounded the necessity of independent investigations conducted by the police through a book titled 'The Understanding of a Self-Governing Police Force'.
Many police officers from the National Police Academy will reportedly hold a meeting to discuss a viable method for independent investigative powers, on May 8.
