Yoo Seung Jun"s New Repertoir "Sad Silence" in Trouble

The popular dance singer Yoo Seung Jun has been placed in an uncomfortable situation due to a demand for 20 million won in compensation for reprinting parts of a song without permission in his recent song 'Sad Silence'. Yoo used a segment of a 1977 song called 'Sympathy' recorded by the band the Rare Birds in his sampling hit.
Warner/Chappell Korea, the copyright holder of Sympathy, stated on May 10 that the composer of Sad Silence, identified only as Kim , used part of Sympathy without permission. To avoid a lawsuit, Kim must pay 20 million won, which amounts to 0.54 percent on sales of 600,000 copies.'
Kim explained, 'I tried to look for the copyright holder before recording but I feel Warner/Chappell's request is excessive.'
This case not only shows the indifference of many singers regarding copyright but also is likely to damage Yoo's image.
