Government to Trim 14,861 Personnel

The government will be executing its second round of restructuring measures by trimming 120 separate departments and offices and reducing 241 senior positions- those above the level of fourth grade in the civil service.
It will ultimately curtail 8,358 government positions as a result of the second phase of restructuring. When this is added to the first phase, total personnel will be reduced by 14,861 by the year 2001, or 10 percent of the 142,209 government employees.
The Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs on May 17 announced that its new reform plan primarily focuses on reducing the ranks of the civil service.
The new government reform plan will be passed in a cabinet meeting on May 20, upon which the president will extensively reshuffle ministry and cabinet positions.
On the endangered list are information service publicists among 13 ministries such as culture and tourism whose positions will all be abolished to make room for the reborn Public Information Section of the National Policies Authority, which will take charge of providing all public and press information instead.
The Ministry of Information and Communications will be significantly downsized as it will lose 7,035 personnel and be deprived of a large part of its authority and number of its departments.
A government spokesperson added that reform measures for the police department, prosecutors and local governments will be executed in the near future.
