Sudden Acceleration Brings Massive Suit

May 26,1999
Automobile sudden acceleration, which has occurred frequently these days, is bringing massive law suits with no clear indication of the cause.
Thirty-nine Hyundai car owner drivers filed a lawsuit against Hyundai on May 26 claiming they suffered injury and property damage by sudden acceleration. Another 16 people also sued Kia Motors for the same reason asking for 660,000 dollars.
Suspect cars include Hyundai's Grandeur, Sonata, Avante, New Grandeur, Dynasty, Accent and Exel and Kia's Credos, Potentia and Enterprise.
Domestic victims of sudden acceleration have demanded 3 million dollars in total against 3 major motor companies such as Hyundai, Kia and Daewoo.
Moreover, actress Kim Su Mi and 7 other persons sued BMW and its export representative Kolon for the same reason, so the litigation regarding the mysterious defect might be increasing.
However, the Seoul district court at the first such case trial on May 26 decided that the case did not meet the standard of liability required for a lawsuit to go forward. This first ruling was a big blow to potential plaintiffs in the future.
