Yeltsin Supports Kim"s Sunshine Policy toward NK

President Kim Dae Jung, on his visit to Russia, attended a summit meeting hosted by President Boris Yeltsin at the Kremlin in Moscow on May 28.
Both President Kim and President Yeltsin agreed that South Korea and Russia should try to actively cooperate in persuading North Korea to accept South Korea's comprehensive engagement policy toward NK.
They agreed to make all efforts possible so that dialogue between the two Koreas may be resumed as soon as possible for establishing peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
President Kim said in a joint news conference following the meeting, 'President Yeltsin supports South Korea's engagement policy and he personally promised me that Russia will strive for the success of the policy.'
After the summit meeting, both Kim and Yeltsin adopted a joint statement (communique) aimed at strengthening the mutual partership between South Korea and Russia.
They stressed in the joint statement that the UN should take the initiative in resolving regional conflicts, hoping that the Balkans crisis triggered by Yugoslavia will be politically, rather than militarily, solved.
Regarding the proposed six-party talks in which Russia, Japan, the two Koreas, the U.S., and China will participate, the joint statement, while acknowledging the necessity of such talks, had no concrete details at this time.
