Smoking Among Young Korean Women on the Up

More and more young Korean women are smoking. This was one of the conclusions drawn from a recent survey of Koreans entitled 'Non-Smoking Realities'. The full results of the survey carried out by Chi Sun Hwa, a professor at Yonsei University, will be revealed in a seminar scheduled for May 31 to mark the 12th anniversary of the World No Smoking Day.
The survey found that the total number of smokers across the nation rose to 12.4 million in 1999 from 11.9 million in 1990 and 10 million in 1980.
The number of women smokers aged between 15 to 19 jumped to 150,000 this year from 52,000 in 1990 - the most striking increase found in any age group.
The proportion of surveyed men who smoke declined to 65.1 percent in 1999 from 75.6 percent in 1990, and 79.3 percent in 1980. The overall percentage of women who smoke decreased to 4.8 percent in 1999 from 6.7 percent in 1990. However, this statistic masks the fact that the rate of women in their twenties who smoke has also risen sharply from 1.5 percent in 1990 to 4.8 percent in 1999.
