National Arboretum to be Established

The Forestry Administration announced Tuesday that it will establish a National Arboretum in charge of systematic management of domestic plant resources in areas such as Kwangnung Arboretum, a well-preserved forest in Kyonggi Province.
Forty experts will be posted at the National Arboretum to build a database and conduct research in the diversity of Korean botany.
In the Kwangnung Arboretum, to be contained within the National Arboretum, 2,931 sorts of plants and 2,881 sorts of animals are housed, including 20 sorts of protected species, such as flying squirrels and giant long-horned beetles.
The public, prohibited entry after environmental disruption which took place after the Arboretum was opened to general access in 1987, excepting researchers and students, will continue to be prohibited.
