FKTU to Call General Strike on June 16
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) said Wednesday that it has called a general strike on June 16, after a meeting of union members' representatives.The FKTU's executive members including Park In Sang, its leader, held a luncheon meeting with the Labor Minister Lee Sang in which they delivered their decision to strike.
The executive members in the meeting urged the minister to open central negotiations between the labor and political sides, in which both FKTU members and governmental representatives will participate.
The FKTU may decide to call another general strike on June 26, depending on the outcomes of negociation after the first general strike.
The Labor Minister said that government will begin working-level negotiations with the FKTU from June 3 to discuss current issues demanded by workers, including shorter working hours.
