Ewha Woman"s Univ. to Punish Cell Phone Use During Lectures

Ewha Woman's University announced Thursday that it has decided to punish students who use cellular phones in the classroom from the second semester of 1999.
The punishment under consideration by the University is lowering the grades of students who use mobile phones during lectures or chapel hours, or forcing those students to do up to thirty hours of labor for the university such as cleaning classrooms.
Frequent use of cellular phones by students in class, which naturally damages the studying atmosphere, has brought about the decision.
Prior to the decision, the university authorities conducted a survey on the issue with 164 students from May 24 to 27.
Of the students surveyed, 53 percent supported punishing those who use mobile phones during lectures and 81 percent said that punishment could help deter the use of cellular phones.
