Milk from First-Time Mothers Contains Twice Dioxine than Other Mothers

The milk produced by a first-time mother contains twice the dioxin than that produced by mothers who have delivered before. Dioxin is an environmental hormone which causes cancer.
Shin Dong Chun, a professor at Yonsei University, announced on June 3 that he had discovered this fact through his research on breast milk from 24 parturient women living in Seoul and Incheon, Korea, beginning in 1997.
A team led by Chang Yoon Suk, professor at Phohang University of Science and Technology, and a Canadian institute were said to have analyzed the breast milk.
According to the analysis results, the milk of a first-time mother contains 20 picogram (pg) of dioxine per gram of fat, over twice found in that of other mothers.
The first milk also contains 7 pg of PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) per gram of fat, much greater than the 4 pg found in milk from later mothers. PCB was once used as a material for electrical current transformation.
Mr. Shin explained that breast-feeding women who have delievered a baby previously have smaller quantities of dioxin and PCB in their milk because they discharge a substantial portion of the accumulated poisonous materials through former breast-feeding.
