Local Phone Charges to be Raised

Telephone charges will be raised to 50 won for a local call from the current 45 won, and the monthly flat fee will also be increased by 500 won to 1,000 won from July at the earliest.
The Ministry of Information and Communication (MOIC) announced on June 11 at a policy review conference, in which public officials, representatives from NGOs and professors participated, that it will discuss the increase in phone bills with the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
The MOIC amended the planned fee hike for local calls to 50 won, a 11.5 percent increase, from the original 55-won cost, due to objections from NGOs. The phone bill raise will be on average 14.9 percent, with the addition of the rise in the basic charge - 500 won in rural areas and 1,000 won in cities. However, the fee for a call from a public phone will not rise from the current 50 won.
Korea Telecom expects to have a further 392 billion won of annual income as a result of the phone fee revision.
