Declaration on Administrative and Democratic Reform Issued

Lee Chang Bok, president of the Korean People's Alliance for Social Reformation, along with 50 other leading members of various civilian groups, issued a '1,000 people's declaration on administrative and democratic reform' which calls on the government to take measures to revamp its administration.
The group assembled in front of the Kwanghwamun building in downtown Seoul on June 21 and urged the government to take the following steps: a full investigation into suspicions of illegal government tampering with trade unions and harsh punishment for those responsible; enactment of corruption-preventing laws; introduction of a special prosecutor system; recruitment of new reformers into the government's ministries; and preparation of general welfare programs for the poor.
They also requested that the government fundamentally reexamine and revise the predominant ruling style which has never gained the nation's support.
One thousand leaders from civil and religious groups across the nation signed the declaration.
