Prime Minister Kim Faces No Confidence Vote
The opposition Grand National Party (GNP) said Friday that it will draft a no confidence proposal on Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil to the National Assembly on August 9.On the background of the proposal Ahn Taek-soo, spokesman for the party, explained that Prime Minister Kim failed to keep his public promise on constitutional change for a parliamentary cabinet system. Mismanagement by the administration on such issues as the annually-repeating damage by rains was also considered, he added.
The vote on the bill will take place on August 12 or 13, the GNP led by Lee Hoi-chang predicted.
In general, the no confidence bill is expected to be turned down.
However, it could be passed in the case that some dissatisfied lawmakers from the ruling parties oppose the postponement of the introduction of a parliamentary cabinet system. If this situation is realized, the coalition government will face a tough time.
At present the GNP holds 139 seats and needs 11 votes in favor from the ruling coalition to win the no confidence vote.
