Overseas Airlines Restore Korean Routes

Foreign airlines, which reduced services on Korea routes after the exchange crisis in November 1997, plan to reinstate full services due to the increase in Korean overseas travellers. The number of Koreans who departed Korea this year totals 2.17 million, 80 percent of the 2.77 million recorded during the same period in 1997.
Continental Airlines of the U.S., which withdrew from Korea in January last year, will re-introduce the Seoul-Guam route twice a week by the middle of September, while Garuda Indonesia plans to re-open the Seoul-Jakarta line, suspended in February 1998.
Swissair and British Airways, which withdrew in March last year, are preparing for the recovery of Seoul routes during the first half of next year.
In November, Cathay Pacific will increase the number of flights on its Seoul-Hong Kong route to 24 from the current 21, and Air Canada will raise the Seoul-Vancouver route to five from current three.
