Eight Government Projects Deemed Inappropriate

Eight governmental projects which have combined budgets of 20 trillion won have been discontinued.
The Ministry of Planning and Budget announced on August 25 that it has decided not to include in the budget the expense of 8 of 16 government projects which would each cost the taxpayer over 50 billion won, after investigations on their appropriateness. It is the first time for multiple national projects to be discontinued in this way. The ministry requested that justifications for each project be given to the Korea Development Institute, after which half of the projects were rejected. Previously governmental administrations received budgets after their own project investigations.
The projects interrupted include the west-coast railroad, the Chunchon - Chulwon highway, the Yangpyong - Pochon highway, the Taegu - Muju highway, Taekwondo park and the Pusan - Kwangju - Taegu circulation highway.
The head of the Budget Coordination Bureau at the ministry, Kim Tae-hyun, said, 'We aim to increase budget efficiency by reducing the 19.9-trillion-won bill for these 8 projects.'
However, 80 billion won of next year's budget has been allocated to the remaining 8 projects, including the construction of the Jindo bridge.
