Prosecution to Impose Harsher Punishment on Motorcycle Gangs
The Seoul District Prosecutor's Office has decided to crack down on motorcycle gangs, who organize teams of motocyclists, break speed limits, are noisy at night and disturb other drivers. The prosecution plans to apply a traffic disturbance crime article, which allows sentences of up to 10 years' imprisonment, to motocyclists who intimidate or impede other drivers by blocking roads or surrounding cars.
Notably, life imprisonment can be given in the event the gang causes other vehicles to overturn or are responsible for injuries or loss of life.
So far, motorcycle gangs have been punished by the Road Traffic Act, which sentences offenders to a maximum 6 months' imprisonment.
The prosecution will use video evidence gathered by police in sentencing, while it will also punish the owners of motorcycle shops who illegally tamper with bikes to increase engine noise.
