Fines on Airplane Accident Likely to Jump

The government's deregulation committee is reportedly considering raising the maximum fine for airplane-related accidents to 10 billion won (about 8.3 million dollars) from the current one billion won.
A high official said on September 10, 'Fines imposed on those accountable for air crashes is too small to effectively prevent accidents, even though large numbers of lives are at stake. We will raise the fine up to 10 billion won to increase observance of precautionary measures.'
According to the current Aviation Act, the Minister of Construction and Transportation can order an aviator to temporararily suspend service or impose a fine in the event the accident occurs intentionally or is caused by aviator error.
