Kim Suggests Creation of "Seoul Forum"

President Kim Dae-jung Monday suggested the creation of a 'Seoul Forum' in the year 2000 as a way of addressing the gap in wealth between member countries of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
At an APEC meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, Kim said that Asian and Pacific nations should solidify ties in macro-economic issues including changing the current international financial structure as well.
He also made an overture of activating more internal investment and balancing social unification among members.
The president stressed that he would like to open the Seoul Forum under the slogan of 'APEC's New Prosperity and Unity' in March 2000, probably in association with a certain international institute.
In his address, the president continued that Korea was able to survive IMF economic crisis through the balancing of an open-door policy and a high degree of autonomy, while hinting at the nation's continuous restructuring.
