President Kim Meets With ULD Leader Park

President Kim Dae-jung met with the president of his coalition partner on Monday at the Blue House (Chong Wa Dae). United Liberal Democrats (ULD) party president, Park Tae-joon, met the president in their regular meeting and agreed on propelling the multi-constituency system and the government-sponsored election management system, which would call for the government paying for candidates' campaigns in order to stave off mounting costs needed to run for public office.
In the discussion on political reform, the two leaders consented to step up the process of the currently stalled reform at the end of this month, while requesting the active participation of the opposition Grand National Party (GNP) in talks.
Park said after the meeting, 'The multi-constituency system which will have at least two congressmen elected in each district is the hope of the two ruling coalition parties and the people. We will do everything in our power to achieve this goal from from this point onward, and, hopefully, a bill should be drawn up as early as possible in order to be in force by the 16th general election on April 2000.'
Regarding the 'Press Coercion' incident, Kim and Park are concerned about the illicit transactions that occurred between politicians and reporters. They both call for a national audit to resolve the incident as quick as possible.
