Prime Minister Proposes Cabinet System

Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil Friday argued the merits of a cabinet system to replace the current presidential system, for the upcoming 21st century.
He attended a reception sponsored by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea at Hotel Lotte and said in his address, 'The one-person oriented presidential system is a lopsided structure in terms of power, and it cannot deliver what the general public wants.'
He added, 'The cabinet system is the only way to achieve the strengthening of national power.'
On economic issues, Kim stated, 'Although we overcame the peril of economic recession under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout within two years, there are still lots of hurdles to jump, including continuous reform.'
Kim said that the 20-month-old appeasement policy towards North Korea has been bringing some positive changes, though not epoch-making ones, but the government will stand firm against any future provocation.
