Pre-election Poll for Kyonggi Province.

Mar 02,2000
The total number of seats for Kyonggi province in the National Assembly is 41. The number is close to that of Seoul's 45, the largest number of seats of any region in the country.

On February 25 the JoongAng Ilbo Survey and Research team asked voters in the Kyonggi area, which candidate they would vote for, except from the newly-formed Democratic People's Party who is yet to select a candidate.

These were the results: 27.9 percent for the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), 24.9 percent for the Grand National Party (GNP), and 7.7 percent for the United Liberal Democrats (ULD).

The researchers analyzed the figures after dividing Kyonggi province into three sectors. Voters north of the Han River chose the MDP with 26.4 percent and the GNP with 24.9 percent. However, voters in Ilsan and Pundang supported the GNP 26.2 percent, 0.3 percent more than the MDP (25.9 percent). The two cities favored different parties, Pundang residents gave the GNP a slight edge, while Ilsan residents favored the MDP.
According to the poll, of the total 41 seats, the MDP won 12 districts, the GNP 9 districts, and the ULD 2 districts. The remaining 18 districts are undecided.
