President Kim Announces Change to Revised Election Law

President Kim Dae-jung has responded to worries over the legality of a revision in election laws allowing for the establishment under the aegis of the Media Mediation Committee of a committee to screen press coverage of elections. He announced changes, saying that, "The changes to the revision should be made by the next session of the National Assembly."
Chong Wa Dae spokesperson Park Joon-young said President Kim was worried that the revision in the election laws could undermine the freedom of expression guaranteed by Korea's constitution.
Kim also said, "Although the revision was aimed at ensuring fair media coverage of election campaigns, the basic freedom and rights of people guaranteed in democratic countries, cannot be violated."
A source from the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) said, "Changes to the revision will be made during the 16th session of the National Assembly. However, we will apply the revised law flexibly even before the National Assembly meets."
