U.S. Embassy Denies Writing Election Report

According to the Yonhap News Agency, an alleged inside report by the U.S. embassy on Korea's general election has puzzled Korea's opposition parties, and led them to question its motives and reliability.
The ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) claimed Wednesday that Seoul's diplomatic community is predicting an MDP victory in the April 13 general elections. A well-informed party source said MDP spokesman Chung Dong-young based his remarks on a report by the U.S. embassy in Seoul."The diplomatic community forecasts that Korean voters want political stability, thus they will vote for the MDP," Chung said.
The opposition Grand National Party (GNP) and the United Liberal Democrats (ULD) immediately reacted to these remarks, accusing the MDP of spreading false information.
GNP election management committee chairman Hong Sa-duk said, "There is no precedent for an ambassador to make a report to their home government available to anyone in their host nation."
The ULD said, "If it was the U.S. embassy that leaked the report, it should be considered interference in Korean internal affairs." The ULD added,"But if the U.S. is not reponsible then the MDP has issued unconfirmed information."
As the alleged report increased tension on Korea's political battleground, the U.S. embassy denied the existence of a report predicting the results of the upcoming general election.
