Park Chan-jong joins Democratic NationalParty

Former assemblyman Park Chan-Jong held a press conference at the National Assembly VIP restaurant, declaring his intention to run in the general election in Pusan's Chungdong district, under the Democratic National Party.
Park said, "The upcoming general election will serve as a yardstick of president Kim Dae-jung's past two year's in office. I have decided to run in Pusan as a candidate of the opposition DPP.
Park said of Lee Hoi-chang, the leader of the Grand National Party (GNP), "He should resign from his post and claim responsibility for the current state of political instability." Park then added, "Hopefully we'll see a unified opposition party before the general election."
Park, the ex-GNP lawmaker, has a history of defeat in politics. He lost the 1997 presidential election as a New Korea Party(NKP) candidate. He then left for Japan, but recently returned to Korean politics, ending a two-year hiatus. In 1996, during the 15th general elections, Lee worked under Lee Hoi-chang.
