Why are the Candidates Spending So Much Money?

Mar 20,2000
This year's election process is extremely heated, resulting in an increase in expenditures by this year's candidates. One region has ten candidates competing from four parties.
Mr.A of the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), who is running in the Youngnam area, said "I spent about $500,000 to confirm the support of about 1500 leaders of small organizations."
The elimination of 26 regional constituencies has resulted in an increase in both competition and the amount of money normally spent in such elections.
Representative F of the MDP said, "I have spent about $24,000 per week on public relations in my area." The voters are a problem too. Voters expect politicians to treat them to meals. One of the candidates is dealing with the matter by only going to seven discount restaurants in his area.
Additionally, early competition between current representatives and new politicians for public nominations is another reason for the increase in the amount of money being spent in this election. MDP politicians said that they spent an average of $190,000 on the nomination process.
