Opposition Asks for Probe into Draft-dodging Scandal

On March 22, the opposition Grand National Party (GNP) revealed a second list of current ministers and deputies whose sons are suspected of draft-dodging. The GNP is calling for an investigation into these cases. This list has been added to the previous list of 17 incumbents and candidates for the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) also alleged to have draft-dodging sons. The GNP urged the prosecution office to begin the probes after the election. However, the GNP has decided not to release the names to the public.
"If the prosecutor's office is going to investigate the sons of opposition lawmakers for allegedly evading conscription, then they must do the same for the sons ruling party members," said GNP spokesman Lee Wong-chang. He added, "Our party still asserts that the probes should be postponed until after the election."
