Prosecution Gets A Taste Of Its Own Medicine in Draft-dodging Scandal

Lim Hwi of the Seoul District Public Prosecutors' Office is expected to take over the prosecution of the draft-dodging case. Lim stated that he would "make the infamous list public if the suspects, including the sons of politicians, failed to respond to the summons" despite the resistence from the Grand National Party (GNP).
Faced with Lim's bullish attitude, the GNP went on the offenseive March 24. GNP party elections committee vice-spokesman Jung Jee-haeng voiced suspicions about Lim's second son who was exempt military service due to being overweight.
Jung asserted, "The investigation into possible drsft-dodging by the sons of politicians should not proceed until the suspicions of draft-dodging by the prosecution's son is first looked into." He added,"Lim's is not the only son of a top prosecutor who has managed to avoid military service." One high level GNP election committee officer who wanted to remain anonymous supported his party's contention that the prosecution has no right to continue their probe until their own sons' actions are examined. GNP election committee spokesman Jang Kwang-gun has repeatedly asked that the investigation be delayed until after the General Election, saying that a 20 day delay will make no difference in the long run.
