Suspicions Raised over Tax Records of 14 General Election Candidates

On March 27, the Citizens' Alliance for the 2000 General Election reported that, "After examining the assets and tax returns recorded in the congress report over the last seven years, we have come to suspect 14 incumbent national legislators of evading their gift taxes." The alliance went on to demand a public explanation from the legislators.

Gi Eun-hee, spokesperson for the Citizens' Alliance for the 2000 General Election, revealed that, "Seven candidates refused to answer our questions, while three candidates gave incomplete explanations and four candidates appear to not have reported or paid their gift taxes."

Among the candidates suspected of evading taxes, eight belong to the Grand National Party, two belong to the Millennium Democratic Party, one belongs to the Democratic People's Party and one is an independent candidate.

The Citizens' Alliance for the 2000 General Election announced that it would add those candidates who fail to provide a full explanation to their blacklist of candidates.
