President Kim to Meet with Opposition Leader Lee


President Kim Dae-jung and opposition leader Lee Hoi-chang will announce a joint statement regarding bipartisan cooperation at the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

Presidential spokesman Park Joon-young said that, "In accordance with public desire, the parties will cooperate with each other to promote increased dialogue and compromise."

He also anticipated that, "The enhancement of national competitiveness and the stabilization of the Korean people's livelihoods will be the foremost concerns, along with bipartisan and nationwide cooperation and support for summit talks between the two Koreas."

Rep. Kim Ok-doo, secretary-general of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), senior presidential secretary for political affairs Namgung Jin, Rep. Ha Soon-bong, GNP secretary-general and chief secretary, Maeng Hyung-kyu prepared the first draft of the joint statement.

The statement is said to contain issues such as election law violations and the abandonment of political reorganization.
