The Leaders of the MDP and ULP Meet

President Kim Dae-jung and Lee Han-dong, the leaders of the Millenium Democratic Party (MDP) and the United Liberal Party (ULP) had a prsidential meeting at Chong Wa Dae on April 28 and decided to make a joint effort to successfully carry out the summit meeting between South and North Korea and to eliminate the regional antagonism which was highlighted in the 16th General Election.

President Kim and Lee made a joint announcement containing eight items concerning a national reconciliation movement, such as settling regional antagonism by opertaing a 'National Reconciliation Committee' where various political parties and groups can participate.

"We agreed on the importance of the political role of the ULP to achieve political safety and stability as well as to acknowledge the people's intention not to allow any one party to take up more than half of the seats in the National Assembly," both said at the announcement.

However, nothing was mentioned concerning an actual cooperative alliance between the two parties said Park Joon-young, the spokesman of Chong Wa Dae.
