Microsoft Blamed for Virulence of Love Virus

The "I Love You Virus" has sparked a heated debate over Microsoft's virus protection on its Outlook e-mail program, whose users were hit particularly hard by the latest outbreak.

"It hasn't been a long time since the Explorer ZIP virus victimized the Internet community, warning the public of the problems associated with Microsoft's monopoly of the industry. Once again a similar virus has appeared, owing to MS's focus on functionality over security," says Charles Cooper, a columnist for ZDnet.

However, Dennis, a software developer in the U.S. disagrees. "Since 85 percent of desktops around the world use MS operating systems, MS-targeted viruses are popular."

Scott Culp, program manager of the security response center for a major software developer, says, "As computer technologies develop, the opportunity to exploit the computer also develops." He adds, "The problem is not technology itself, but its users."

There are still some that blame Microsoft's presence in the market for the unfettered spread of viruses like the I Love You Virus.

"If there had been more Netscape or Eudora users, the scope of the damage would have been much smaller," says one industry analyst.
