Employers Demand Stronger Voice in Parliamentary Committee
Economic circles have intensified their lobbying to influence politicians who sit on the Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly. On May 16, Kim Chang-sung, Chairman of the Korean Employers' Federation (KEF) suggested in a meeting with Seo Young-hoon of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party and Lee Han-dong of the minority opposition United Liberal Democratic Party, that they select more KEF-friendly National Assembly members to make up the KEF side of the Committee.
The KEF said, "We are concerned that the committee could be biased towards labor since during the last General Election, there were a considerable number of progressive members elected." Seo and Lee were attentive to the complaint, saying, "We will take it fully into account."
The KEF argues that labor demands for "a five-day work week and increased payment for full-time union workers are unrealistic." The KEF called for "politicians to listen to both sides in labor-management disputes."
