President to Unveil Sustainable Development Commission
A presidential commission in charge of mediating various policies to coordinate environmental protection and development is to be established. President Kim Dae-jung plans to announce his environmental vision for the nation in the new millennium at a ceremony for 'Environment Day' on June 5, including plans to establish the tentatively titled 'Commission on Sustainable Development.'The commission, to be organized and run by the presidential order, will be responsible for the formation of a long-term environmental preservation plan at government level, and for deciding and mediating investment priorities in environmental preservation projects.
The commission will also play a role in preparing programs to evaluate policies implemented by government bureaux in view of promoting environmental preservation. In addition, the commission will be responsible for formulating programs to realize the 'National Agenda 21.'
In particular, the presidential commission will mediate between bureaux where conflicts of interests occur regarding development projects which could cause environmental damage. The commission will also address and reflect environmental concerns raised by environmental organizations as well as local residents.
