MDP and GNP Still at Odds over Committee Appointments

June 08,2000
On June 6, the secretary general for the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), Chong Kyun-hwan, and Chong Chang-hwa of the Grand National Party (GNP) met to discuss the make-up of the committees in time for the opening session of the National Assembly, but did not reach an agreement on the numerous positions needing to be filled by the incoming congress. This means that the opening of the National Assembly will have to be postponed to June 9 from the originally scheduled date of June 7.

In addition to the parties jostling for committee seats, there is a big possibility that people will have to wait until after President Kim's Pyongyang visit for committee appointments to be made.

Chong Chang-hwa, the GNP whip, said that the MDP was insistent on securing the chairperson's seat on certain committees. Chong added, "We did not come any closer to agreeing on committee appointments either."
