MDP Chooses Park Byung-sok for Party Spokesman

The ruling Millennium Democratic Party designated on June 21 lawmaker Park Byung-sok as its new spokesman. Former spokesman Chung Dong-young tendered his resignation to President Kim Dae-jung at a party convention, to pursue a position as a standing member of the party.

Park Byung-sok made a name for himself in 1989 following the outbreak of the protests at Tiananmen Square in China and the resulting massacre. Park, JoongAng Ilbo's Hong Kong correspondent at the time, first broke the story of Party General Secretary Zhao Ziyang's arrest.

Park won a seat during the April 13 general elections and is acknowledged to be a seasoned politician with fresh ideas.
