MDP Representative Denies Rumors of Red Cross Presidency Post

MDP representative Suh Young-hoon on June 26 denied the rumors that are making rounds at Chong Wa Dae that he will resign from office to head the Korean Red Cross.

The rumor has created discord among members of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) ahead of the party convention scheduled for August.

Representative Suh met with reporters to clear the air on his rumored resignation, saying, "I have not been notified (on the Red Cross presidency) nor do I intend to take the post - unless President Kim Dae-jung orders it."

Despite Suh's announcement, some officials at Chong Wa Dae and the MDP are insisting, "Red Cross President Chung Won-shik, whose term ends July 30, will likely be succeeded by Suh, who has long participated in the civic movement and has held the post of Red Cross secretary general."

To this, Chong Wa Dae's chief secretary Namkung Jin and senior secretary for press affairs Park Joon-young said that the rumors were "not true."
