President Kim Critical of Illegal Maneuvering of Interest Groups

At a cabinet meeting on June 27th, President Kim Dae-jung stated that there was a disturbing increase in certain groups with "very self-centered agendas" and "without any regard for the damage they are causing to society at large." "We have a duty to protect society from any illegal activities these groups may do," he added.

President Kim cited recent examples of the medical community and certain labor unions that appeared to be thinking anything was attainable by mounting enough pressure. The president continued that these kind of pressure tactics bring about only more "confusion and instability," and added that no group should think that illegal actions justify results gained.

"If strikes or actions are legal as well as moral, there should be no problems. But it is when these actions are done outside of the law that problems occur. There will be 'serious repercussions' if public health and security are jeopardized."

Regarding any situations that may arise with other interest groups, the president urged his cabinet to mind the precedents and laws in effect as well as the importance of keeping the lines of communication open.
