President Kim Pressed for an Early Revision of SOFA
President Kim Dae-jung, regarding the negotiation on the Korea-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) revision expressed, "It is best to come to an agreement through discussion between Korea and the U.S." at the reception of Admiral Dennis Blair, commander-in-chief of U.S. Pacific Forces, on August 17.President Kim pressed for an early revision of the SOFA, contending that, "Though the Korea-U.S. SOFA includes articles more advantageous to Korea in comparison to the U.S.-Japan SOFA and the U.S.-Germany SOFA At least two of the articles of the Korea-U.S. SOFA appear to be somewhat unfair toward Korea." In response, Admiral Dennis Blair indicated, "We will try to balance the SOFA through proper examination."
