Rhee In-je's Controversial Remark

Rep. Rhee In-je of the Millennium Democratic Party said on August 23, "There is still a chance to win the next Presidential election if a capable leader can be found who is from the Chungchung Province." He continued, "We are confident of an overwhelming victory in the next Presidential election when we come face to face with the leader of the opposition Grand National Party, Lee Hoi-chang."

The theme of Rhee In-je's speech was,'Who will crush the arrogant Lee Hoi-chang' during a joint speech with other candidates. The speech was delivered during the National convention to select candidates for party leadership in both the South and North Chungchung areas.

In response to Rhee In-je's controversial remark, most candidates running in the presidential race in the MDP commented that his speech directly contradicts President Kim Dae-jung. Kim previously stated that the National convention has nothing to do with the Presidential election or party domination.
