Top Officials of MDP Appointed

The Millennium Democratic Party held a special convention on August 30 in Seoul's Olympic Park gymnastics stadium. The MDP elected seven names to assume places in the supreme council, while President Kim selected the five other spots. Elected were Hahn Hwa-kap, Rhee In-je, Kim Joong-kwon, Park Sang-cheon, Kim Keun-tae, Chung Dong-young,and Chyung Dai-chul. Representative Hahn reportedly was the top vote-getter.

President and MDP leader Kim Dae-jung named Suh Young-hoon and four others to the council. The president reappointed Suh as the chairman of the MDP and the supreme council. Those designated by Kim were senior adviser Kwon Roh-kap, former minister of Culture and Tourism Shin Nak-kyun, lawmaker Chang Tae-wan and former lawmaker Chang Eul-byung.

"Both the ruling and the opposition party must find a way to reconcile and start a dialog," said the president in his congratulatory speech. "The normalization of the National Assembly is possible only when we proceed according to the law."
