Former President Blasts Kim Dae-jung's Food Aid Plan

Former President Kim Young-sam on Sept. 16 had harsh words for President Kim Dae-jung's plan to send food aid to North Korea. Speaking in a phone conversation with Grand National Party (GNP) leader Lee Hoi-chang, his remarks were reported to the press by GNP spokesman Kwon Chol-hyon.

"He's out of his mind," Kim Young-sam was reported to have said. "Heavy rain is sweeping the whole of Pusan and South Kyongsang Province away. How can he even consider giving away 600,000 tons of our rice to the North!"

"We're out of fruit, and fisheries have been completely destroyed. Where is he going to get the money to buy 600,000 tons of rice to send to the North when we are suffering from a food shortage ourselves!"

Kim spoke before departing to the Philippines to participate in the the 1st Asia Political Conference.
