President Declines Offer of Nobel Park
President Kim Dae-jung on Wednesday declined a proposal by the Shinan local authority to build a 10-billion-won "Nobel Peace Park" on his hometown island of Haido in South Cholla Province."The president has decided not to accept the offer, saying it would not be appropriate for him to become involved in a commemorative project during his tenure," said the presidential spokesman, Park Joon-young.
Mr. Park said that Mr. Kim regarded the award last week of the Nobel Peace Prize as a sign of encouragement for him to continue with rapprochement with the North and to keep furthering the causes of democracy and human rights.
"The president has said that he wants to be judged for his work as president by history," Mr. Park said.
