Blue House Ends Inquiry on Loans

The Blue House said Friday that it has concluded an internal inquiry into allegations that top officials in the Kim Dae-jung administration were involved in the latest illegal loan-kickback scandal involving a venture firm.

Presidential officials said that they found no evidence suggesting involvement of top government officials. The investigation was conducted by the presidential Office of Civil Affairs. The investigation was separate from an ongoing one by the prosecution.

The investigation was conducted against a background of rumors of involvement by top government officials, which threaten to develop into political chaos.

The investigation, in particular, concentrated on rumors that Lee Kyung-ja, vice chairman of Dongbang Mutual Savings and finance, heavily lobbied top officials in the presidential office. Rep. Chung Hyung-keun of the opposition Grand National Party leveled the allegations.

Presidential investigators said that they searched thoroughly into the presidential office's visitor's log, but did not find the names of Mrs. Lee and her husband.
