No Agreement Yet On Work Permits
The ruling Millennium Democratic Party failed Tuesday to reach an agreement on adopting a work permit system for foreigners. The plan to adopt the system, in action since summer, faced internal party opposition as lawmakers cited the difficult economic situation in South Korea.
The permit system, if adopted, would give many foreign laborers, mostly from Southeast Asia and China, a work permit. Currently, these laborers can come legitimately into the country only as government industrial trainees and can work only in jobs designated by a semi-government organization.
"We do not oppose the system per se. But we have to consider the domestic economic situation in deciding when to implement this system," a ruling party lawmaker said.
