A New Controversy On Red Cross Aide

Representative Kwon Chul-hyun, spokesman of the opposition Grand National Party, charged Thursday that "it is disgraceful for the government to force Chang Choong-sik, president of South Korea's Red Cross, to leave the country Wednesday right before the reunion of separated families."

Rep. Kwon also urged that "the government should disclose who drove out Mr. Chang."

He unexpectedly flew to Japan on Wednesday evening. In an interview with a local monthly magazine in October, he caused a controversy by saying that there is no freedom in North Korea.

The United Liberal Democrats charged that "Mr. Chang seemed to make an abrupt departure so as to satisfy the North. The government has to reveal who made the decision."

But Park Ki-ryun , secretary-general of the Korean Red Cross, said that Mr. Chang decided himelf to fly to Japan. He will return home Monday, after the reunions.
