Lee Wants New Team To Handle Economy

Opposition Leader Lee Hoi-chang called on President Kim Dae-jung Thursday to replace the economic team for the future of the nation's economy.

"President Kim Dae-jung should make prudent appointments of economic policymakers and presidential aides for the economy," Mr. Lee said as he spoke before the Graduate School of Public Administration at Wonkwang University in North Cholla Province.

Mr. Lee said that the president should do away with aides who agree with everything he says and who muddle his sense of judgement. He also asked lawmakers with the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts to reject the proposal to give National Assembly members a pay hike.

Mr. Lee asked the lawmakers on the committee to reduce the proposed 101 trillion won budget for fiscal 2001 to 92 trillion won. He then called President Kim Dae-jung, who leaves for Norway on Friday, and wished him a safe trip.

"Mr. Lee knows that the president is in a tight situation with his party right now and is lending support," an opposition party insider said.

Political analysts said the opposition leader wants to maintain the widespread public support his party has gained recently. The opposition party ended the parliamentary boycott which was triggered by the ruling Millennium Democratic Party's blocking of an attempt to impeach the nation's two top prosecutors.
