Retirements Upheld

The Constitutional Court rejected Thursday a complaint from 10 teachers that the law changing the retirement age for teachers from 65 to 62 is unconstitutional.

The court said the lowering of the retirement age, intended to facilitate public school reform, has a vital purpose and is therefore allowed by the constitution. It added that the retirement age for other people in public service is 60 and that the three-year reduction cannot be considered severe.

The teachers claimed that the change, which took effect in January, violated their constitutional right to carry out their public duty.

The law does not cover college professors.
