Budget Pact Allows Passage Next Week
Ruling and opposition lawmakers agreed Friday to pass the government budget for fiscal 2001 on Wednesday as, after a week of partisan bickering in the extra session, they tackled the urgent business of approving the 101 trillion won ($84 billion) budget.Rep. Chung Kyun-hwan of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party and Rep. Chung Chang-wha of the opposition Grand National Party hammered out the target date, which is 12 days before fiscal 2001 begins.
The representatives also agreed to extend through Jan. 9 the extra session for passage of other bills.
The agreement paves the way for President Kim Dae-jung's promised reshuffling of personnel to take place by the end of the month.
