New Talks On SOFA Seen Soon

Talks aimed at revising the Status of Forces Agreement are likely to resume early next year, a senior government source said Monday.

"Even though both chief delegates are holding talks privately, there are still differences over pending issues such as criminal jurisdiction. Also, we still have not decided whether official talks can reopen this year," the official said.

Official talks between South Korea and the United States on the accord governing the 37,000 U.S. soldiers in South Korea began early this month.

But they soon foundered over criminal jurisdiction and environmental issues.
