Ruling Party Elects New Floor Leader

The ruling Millennium Democratic Party elected Friday a three-term lawmaker, Rep. Lee Sang-soo, 55, as its new floor leader. He replaces Rep. Chung Kyun-hwan, who resigned earlier under pressure.

Mr. Lee's choice is seen as a consolidation of the ruling party's leadership, headed by party chairman Kim Joong-kwon. Neither are part of the inner circle of what is called the "Donggyo-dong faction," a group of Kim Dae-jung loyalists who have been his supporters since his days as an opposition leader and whose personal loyalty has caused inter-party strife.

The new floor leader entered politics in 1988 when he was tapped by President Kim Dae-jung to run for office as a candidate of Mr. Kim's former Party for Peace and Democracy.
